It’s
a world-wide epidemic: vitamin D deficiency. 14 in every 100 people around the world has poor
vitamin D levels. (1) One study reports that it
affects 1 billion people worldwide. (2) Low vitamin D status is linked
to a wide range of diseases. Raising
vitamin D levels is beneficial and easy…if vitamin D supplementation is followed.
Soft Health and Healing Clinic encourages our Brooks chiropractic patients to know
and work to raise as necessary their vitamin D levels.
Soft Health and Healing Clinic is sure that positive health benefits
will follow from this effort.
DISEASES RELATED TO LOW VITAMIN D LEVELS
A widespread vitamin D deficiency is associated
with many diseases. The incidence of cancers like breast, colorectal, kidney, lung, and pancreatic
is related to low vitamin D levels. Diabetes, rickets, rheumatic
arthritis, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer diseases, benign paroxysmal positional
vertigo, osteomalacia, osteoporosis, and fractures in adults are as well.
(1, 2, 3) Vitamin D participates importantly in calcium
homeostasis, skeletal metabolism, and the function of immune, cardiovascular
and reproductive systems. (2) Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo is also research-related
to vitamin D status and bone mineral density. (3) It responds well to vitamin
D3 supplementation. Testing
for the occurrence of osteopenia/osteoporosis in these patients is the test
as to the effectiveness of the treatment. (4) Soft Health and Healing Clinic
notes that this is interesting as these two conditions are also known to be influenced by vitamin D status as well. Brooks
chiropractic care at Soft Health and Healing Clinic benefits Brooks chiropractic
patients with these conditions.
BENEFITS OF IMPROVING VITAMIN D LEVELS
Supplementing those who take antidepressants with vitamin D
is shown to improve the antidepressive effect. Researchers propose
that vitamin D may be beneficial for other such conditions beyond just
depression like schizophrenia, cognitive disturbances, attention deficit
disorder, and autism. (1) Providing a daily same
dose of vitamin D (1000 units/kg I.P.) to post-surgical back patients on day one through day 21 lessens
symptoms of neuropathic pain. (5) Soft Health and Healing Clinic acknowledges how
these benefits are worth the effort our Brooks
chiropractic patients would accept to elevate
poor vitamin D levels.
HOW TO RAISE VITAMIN D LEVELS
A study of healthy young women revealed that consuming
calcium plus vitamin D (1500 IU) by those with less than 20ng/L or 800 IU of
vitamin D by patients with levels of greater than 20
ng/L. Both saw their vitamin D levels increase. The rise was seen
within the first 30 days
of the study for those taking calcium plus vitamin D. A thought-provoking side finding in this study: It’s difficult
to get people to do what is recommended! Only 67 of the 106
study women followed the directions for the 3 months of the
study! (6)
