Brooks Chiropractic Care of Headache and Tips for Headache and Migraine Prevention

Headaches and migraines are never welcome. Headache sufferers are typically very ready for tips on how to prevent them. Over 50 years of age, sufferers of migraine, a primary headache, find themselves members of a global community with migraine as a foremost cause of disability. (1) Soft Health and Healing Clinic offers some prevention tips and treatment relief ideas just for our Brooks headache and migraine sufferers.

DIET AND WEIGHT

A healthy diet nourishes the body and the mind. Researchers have noticed that migraine triggers appear in a variety of forms - environmental, hormonal, and dietary. A high-quality diet successfully helps control migraine. Further, and more specifically, women with chronic migraine ate a poorer quality diet than that of women with episodic migraine. (2) Another study got even more specific with the type of diet beneficial to migraine patients, specifically those who are overweight. A very low-calorie ketogenic diet was found to be episodic-migraine preventative. Effectiveness was noted within one month of the diet change. (3) Soft Health and Healing Clinic is not telling that any of our patients start a specific diet now! If a Brooks headache sufferer wants to try a new diet, Soft Health and Healing Clinic is here to discuss and determine which diet (if any special one) is appropriate.

NUTRITION: Vitamin D

The same goes for vitamin D supplementation. Vitamin D deficiency has been found in 45% to 100% of migraine sufferers. The anti-inflammatory and antioxidant qualities of vitamin D have initiated a look at including it in the care and prevention of headache and migraine. One study reported that trial doses of 1000-4000 IU per day decreased the frequency of migraine including the routine drug therapy. More study needs to be completed, but vitamin D supplementation appears encouraging. (1) Soft Health and Healing Clinic explores the nutrition of each individual Brooks chiropractic patient and suggests supplementation when applicable.

CHIROPRACTIC AND INTEGRATIVE CARE

Headaches of all types – primary headaches like migraine and tension-type headache – are common complaints brought to the Brooks chiropractor. Research reported that complementary and integrative medicine - nutrition, movement (yoga), manual therapy, traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture, massage, biofeedback, meditation, and mind-body strategies – was beneficial. More specifically, spinal manipulation, chiropractic care, some supplements, diet change and hydrotherapy are reported helpful for migraine headache. (4)
